As guest lecturer on a field trip to Bratislava

Over the course of one week 35 photography students from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague embarked on a journey in and around Bratislava. All students made a person project which resulted in a publication, a website and a exhibition in the gallery of the art school of Bratislava.

Joining teachers were: Donald Weber, Raimond Wouda, Pawel Pokutycki, Annaleen Louwes, Lotte Sprengers, Rob Hornstra and me.

As jury chair of Award for Innovative Photojournalism 2016 (part of the Canon Zilveren Camera Award) I had the honour to award Ruben Terlou with the 1st prize for his project ‘Along the banks of the Yangtze’.

Years I spent shifting through White House photographer Pete Souza’s archives. I created collections for recurring topics, and began to see how public perception of Barack Obama is deliberately shaped. This is my analysis – and a trove of wonderful photos.

Last Monday I was invited to co-host the bimonthly evening on photography De Donkere Kamer in Amsterdam. I interviewed journalist and author Merel Bem about her new book ‘Doorkijken’, and Annemarie Zethof of the IBASHO gallery in Antwerpen on Japanese photography.

I’ll be co-hosting the next episode in February 2017. Stay tuned… 

Art should play a ‘need to know’ role in journalism

In my years of doing image direction
for different journalistic media I never understood why art is only present in
the ‘nice to know’ section of news,
while especially art is capable of communicating the huge and abstract world wide problems we’ll have to deal with these days like climate change, growing inequality and privacy.
So I wrote a warm plea for the unique qualities of arts and why it should be published on front pages more often.
